One man is in custody following the suspicious death of a two-year-old boy in a Quebec City suburb Thursday evening.
Police in Levis, Que. were called to the home by the toddler's mother. When emergency workers arrived on the scene they found the boy dead from a gunshot wound.
Circumstances of the incident are unclear, however, provincial police, who have taken over the investigation, believe the incident may be accidental.
"At this point the investigation shows that (it was) probably not a voluntary act," provincial police Sgt. Claude Denis told CTVNews.ca.
A man in his 30s, described by Denis as an "acquaintance" of the woman, was taken into custody for questioning.
An autopsy on the boy was also expected to be performed on Friday.
Denis said the file will be handed over to prosecutors to decide on charges once the investigation is completed.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating reports that the woman received threatening messages on Facebook from a stranger earlier in the day. However, Denis would not say whether the messages were linked to the shooting.
"We are considering all information that could help us in this case," he said. "There is some information about Facebook and our investigator will take this information."
