White powder mailed to the offices of two senators has been deemed harmless, according to the House of Commons Protective Services.

An email from protective services says that authorities “have confirmed that the substance is non-toxic.”

The RCMP was notified earlier Monday after envelopes containing an unknown white powder were received at two senators' offices.

The return address on the envelopes was marked "Ottawa shooting."

“Additional mail scanning protocols continue to be in place and we ask that you continue to exercise vigilance when handling incoming mail,” deputy Sergeant-at-Arms Patrick McDonell wrote in the email.

None of the employees who came in contact with the envelopes are showing any signs of illness.

A spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney told CTV News in an email that the RCMP is investigating.

“The safety of Parliamentarians and their staff is a primary concerns at all times,” Jean-Christophe de le Rue said.

Earlier this month, envelopes containing white powder were sent to the riding offices of four federal cabinet ministers from Quebec. That powder was also harmless, police said, but added they would not reveal what the substance was until they completed their investigation.
