Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale is expected to announce her resignation Wednesday morning, CTV News has confirmed.

It’s unclear why Dunderdale is stepping down, but she has taken a political hit over her handling of recent power outages.

It was one of the issues cited by backbencher Paul Lane when he crossed the floor to the Opposition on Monday.

Lane accused Dunderdale of failing to take control during the blackouts.

"The premier was once again nowhere to be found," he told reporters.

"To make matters worse, two or three days later, when the premier finally decided to speak to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, instead of demonstrating empathy for all the people negatively impacted by the blackouts, the focus of the news conference centred around whether or not the situation by definition was a crisis.

"For many people, this was indeed a crisis."
