OTTAWA - The Senate body that oversees the spending of senators could decide today whether a partner at accounting firm Deloitte will have to testify about the Mike Duffy controversy.
A motion is expected to go before the chamber's internal economy committee, asking that Michael Runia answer questions.
Conservatives on the same committee last week rejected a Liberal motion to hear from Runia.
Other events taking place today on Parliament Hill include:
- National and local leaders of Unifor, the combined former CAW and CEP unions, will state their case today against labour law changes being proposed by the Harper government under the budget implementation bill, C-4.
- The Senate national finance committee will scrutinize the government's spending plans included in Bill C-4 as well as the most recent supplementary estimates.
- Two ministers of state, Kevin Sorenson of finance and Maxime Bernier, responsible for small business, will be jointed by Lucie Tedesco of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada to announce measures they say will protect consumers.
- Conservative MP Michael Chong will introduce his private member's bill, designed to make changes to the Canada Elections Act and the Parliament of Canada Act.
- Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney and RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson will talk about spending plans for emergency preparedness at the Commons national security committee.
- Status of Women Minister Kellie Leitch will announce measures to combat so-called "honour" killings of young women.
- And the two main opposition parties will get together on the steps of Parliament and call for more federal spending to combat homelessness.
