CHARLOTTETOWN -- The leader of the New Democrats in Prince Edward Island is calling on the governing Liberals to call an election for next June.

Mike Redmond says the government should deliver its budget in the spring so that voters can see the latest numbers.

Redmond says the government should then legislate an election date of June 1, 2015.

The election is currently set for next October, but that could be moved to a date earlier or later if the federal election is scheduled for the same time.

There are currently 23 Liberals in the 27-seat legislature, three Progressive Conservatives, and one Independent.

Both the Liberals and the Tories are expected to choose new leaders at conventions set for Feb. 20-21 and Feb. 28, respectively.
