An Ontario MP will be one of many Canadians watching history unfold in Philadelphia on Thursday night, when Hillary Clinton becomes the first woman to accept a major U.S. party’s nomination for president.

Salma Zahid, a Liberal MP who represents the Ontario riding of Scarborough Centre, is attending the Democratic National Convention as a member of the Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary Group. The organization is made up of delegates from Canada’s Parliament and U.S. Congress, and meets annually to exchange information and discuss issues affecting both countries.

In an interview with CTV News Channel Thursday morning, Zahid said she’s very excited that she will be there when Clinton delivers her speech at the convention.

“Obviously it’s not the first in the world, but a lot of people look towards the U.S.A., and it’s really going to be an exciting moment when a woman accepts the nomination,” Zahid said.

Zahid had just started her undergraduate program in Pakistan in 1988 when Benazir Bhutto became the country’s first female prime minister.

“I know what an exciting moment it was there, and the impact it made on me as a young girl,” she said.

Zahid said young girls “around the world” will listen to Clinton’s acceptance speech Thursday night, and hopefully feel inspired.

She said it’s been “interesting” to watch U.S. politics in action at the convention, noting the meeting is “much larger” than political events in Canada.

She’s happy to see all the “passionate people” who are “concerned for the future of their country.”

Zahid is at the convention as a “non-partisan observer,” and said, as a member of Canadian Parliament, she is looking forward to working closely with whoever becomes U.S. president.
