Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau faced a barrage of questions on Friday over a break in his campaign schedule on the same weekend his party's platform costing is being released.
During a campaign event to announce his immigration platform in Brampton, Ont., Trudeau was asked if his planned pause Saturday, is an attempt to "hide" from media questions about his soon-to-be-released economic framework.
"I get to go home and spend a little time with my family tonight, which I always need after an intense time," Trudeau said, explaining that, during his time away from the campaign trail, he'll be with his family and prepare for the federal leaders' foreign policy debate, scheduled for Monday evening.
"In preparing for debates, politicians have a lot of work to do," he said.
Trudeau's appearance in Brampton came the morning after he participated in the French-language debate in Montreal.
Trudeau said his party's platform costing will present a "fully responsible and detailed plan" for the economy, and he is "looking forward to taking questions in the days and weeks to come."
Thomas Mulcair mocked Trudeau's planned absence at an NDP campaign event on Friday morning. "Oh, darn," the NDP Leader said, when asked about Trudeau's schedule. "If he has numbers, let him publish them, but I don't know why he would be hiding from giving answers for several days after."
Mulcair also slammed Trudeau for comments he made in an interview with CTV Atlantic's Steve Murphy earlier this week. In the interview, Trudeau said: "We have a full costing coming out – no, we're the first party to put out a fully costed framework."
Mulcair seemed to refer to that statement – which is highlighted in an article on the NDP's website – in his criticism of the Liberal Leader. "In one sentence, he managed to say one thing and its total opposite," Mulcair said.
The NDP released their platform costing last week, although some promises have not yet been unveiled.
