VERNON, B.C. - The RCMP say they used a Taser with little effect before they were forced to shoot and kill a knife-wielding man in Vernon, B.C.
The Mounties say they went to an apartment to arrest a man under the Mental Health Act on Thursday because he was considered suicidal.
Southeast district commander Don Harrison says when officers entered the suite they found the man to be highly agitated and armed with a knife, which he refused to drop.
He says Mounties used a Taser to stun the man, but it had little effect and the officers had to use their guns, firing two shots.
Harrison says an independent investigator from the Calgary Police has been called in to review the shooting, and the investigation will be monitored by the RCMP Public Complaints Commissioner.
The coroner is also investigating.
