INUVIK, N.W.T. - The most northerly mosque in North America is opening today in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
The building was pre-fabricated in Winnipeg and shipped some 4,500 kilometres along roads and rivers.
Hussain Guisti, who organized the project, says it was a long and arduous journey, but one that has given Muslims in the Arctic town a new centre for their community.
The building had to get through narrow bridges and closed roads, and faced a tight deadline for shipment by barge.
At one point, the mosque almost tipped over before a road construction crew came to help out.
There are some 80 Muslims in Inuvik, who until now have been holding prayer services inside a small trailer.
