A Canadian man and his British girlfriend have posted a terrifying video of themselves apparently being robbed by armed men on a dirt path in Guatemala -- an incident they're sharing as a warning to other tourists in the Central American country.

The video shows Dan Landsborough, of Calgary, and Heidi Burton as they are stopped on their motorcycle by two men dressed all in black and wearing balaclavas. One robber appears to be holding an assault rifle, though it’s only visible for a brief moment in the video; a crude machete is clearly visible at another point.

The two robbers look through a satchel attached to the handlebars, then cut it free using the machete. They also apparently made off with an iPhone, money, some rings and a GPS device.

The entire event is said to have been captured by a helmet-mounted camera worn by the Canadian man.

Landsborough can be heard cursing when he sees the first robber step out onto the road ahead. The second robber appears out of the bushes to the right.

“I don’t have any money,” Burton says.

“OK, OK,” says Landsborough. The audio then fades out entirely.

The video, published on Apr. 13, includes a description from Landsborough that says the robbery occurred on Apr. 10, 2014.
“Robbed at gunpoint on the road between San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan,” says the description. “We have uploaded this video clip to serve as a warning to other travelers about taking this road. Robberies happen in Guatemala and this particular spot is apparently notorious.”

The description also says the audio was removed from part of the video at the request of Burton, who was “understandably distressed.”

The video’s authenticity has not been confirmed.
