SAN DIEGO -- Yasmani Grandal singled in the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning and the San Diego Padres beat the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 Friday night.

Earlier in the inning, the Dodgers used a five-man infield and then a four-man shift.

With runners on second and third and a 1-1 count to Abraham Almonte, the Dodgers brought in centre fielder Andre Ethier to play first base, with Adrian Gonzalez playing between first and second. Almonte walked.

Against a four-man shift -- all on the right side of the infield -- left-handed hitter Seth Smith grounded to second baseman Dee Gordon, who forced Amarista at home.

Grandal then singled to right on a 3-2 pitch to bring in Solarte.

Amarista started the winning rally with a single to left off Kevin Correia (2-2). Yangervis Solarte walked with one out and both advanced on a wild pitch.

Tim Stauffer (5-2) pitched the 12th for the win.

ANGELS 4, ATHLETICS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Jered Weaver outpitched Jon Lester, Albert Pujols hit his 516th career homer and the Angels extended their AL West lead over Oakland to three games.

A night after the Angels edged the Athletics 4-3 in 10 innings, they won with pitching and power.

Chris Iannetta hit a two-run shot despite a valiant effort by centre fielder Coco Crisp, making it 2-0 in the fifth, and that was enough for Weaver and the bullpen.

Weaver (15-7) threw three-hit ball for seven innings, striking out three and walking three.

Lester (13-9) gave up two earned runs in six innings.

INDIANS 6, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer to help the Indians to their fifth win in six games.

Santana connected in the ninth inning for his 22nd home run. He homered five times at Kauffman Stadium in a series last month.

Kansas City's lead in the AL Central was cut to a half-game over Detroit, which won 7-1 at the White Sox.

Cleveland's Danny Salazar (5-6) pitched four-hit ball for five shutout innings. He didn't come back out after a 44-minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth.

Kansas City's Jason Vargas (10-7) gave up 10 hits and four runs in six innings.

GIANTS 13, BREWERS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Buster Posey went 5 for 5 and drove in three runs in just six innings, then was pulled early as the Giants earned fourth straight win.

Posey had a triple in his second career five-hit game. The star catcher is batting .500 (20 for 40) with five home runs and 13 RBIs in his past nine games.

Gregor Blanco hit a two-run homer to back Ryan Vogelsong's first victory in four starts. The Giants scored a season high in runs and have their longest winning streak since five straight victories in early June.

Vogelsong (8-9) snapped an 0-5 skid at home, where he had received zero runs of support in each of his previous five outings at AT&T Park.

Wily Peralta (15-9) gave up six runs and nine hits in three innings for NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

NATIONALS 8, MARINERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) -- Anthony Rendon hit one of Washington's four homers off Felix Hernandez, and the Nationals showed off their power while snapping a three-game losing streak.

Rendon hit a solo shot in the first, and Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond and Wilson Ramos also connected against Hernandez (13-5). It was the first time Hernandez has allowed four homers in a game.

Werth's two-run shot in the third gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead and Desmond added his 22nd an inning later.

Bryce Harper and Ramos went deep in the eighth against Joe Beimel.

Jordan Zimmermann (10-5) struck out eight in six innings for Washington.

PIRATES 2, REDS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Josh Harrison hit an RBI triple and scored on Jose Tabata's tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, leading Pittsburgh to the win.

Harrison had three hits in the Pirates' sixth win in eight games. Tabata, starting in right field for the injured Travis Snider, finished with two hits.

Pirates starter Edinson Volquez was working on a no-hitter before Devin Mesoraco's leadoff single in the seventh. He was charged with one run and three hits in 7 2-3 innings.

Reds right-hander Mike Leake allowed six hits in seven innings in his second consecutive scoreless outing.

Tony Watson (10-1) got the win and Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his 25th save.

Reds right-hander Jonathan Broxton (4-2) allowed two runs and three hits in the eighth.

ORIOLES 9, TWINS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Chris Davis hit his fourth career grand slam, and Baltimore got a dominating pitching performance from Miguel Gonzalez.

Delmon Young also homered for the AL East-leading Orioles, who built an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning against rookie Trevor May (0-4).

Baltimore's fourth win in five games was marred by an injury to first baseman Steve Pearce, who left with a right abdominal strain.

It was the fifth loss in six games for the Twins. Their lone bright spot was a home run by Trevor Plouffe, the 10,000th in franchise history.

Gonzalez (7-7) allowed one runs and four hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.

TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) -- Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings, and the contending Tigers won for the fifth time in six games.

Verlander (12-11) matched his season high with eight strikeouts. He allowed one run and nine hits while improving to 14-4 with a 2.94 ERA in his last 19 starts against Chicago.

The White Sox have lost nine of 10.

J.D. Martinez had a double and two singles for Detroit. The Tigers got 13 hits, including five doubles.

Scott Carroll (5-9) took the loss but didn't get much support in the field. The White Sox made four errors, contributing to four unearned runs.

YANKEES 6, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) -- Jacoby Ellsbury and Chase Headley homered, leading the Yankees to the win.

Chris Capuano (2-3) pitched 6 1-3 innings in his first win in seven starts since joining New York. The veteran left-hander, who was acquired last month in a trade with Colorado, allowed three runs, two earned, and eight hits.

David Robertson got the final four outs for his 35th save in 38 chances.

Jose Bautista homered and Dioner Navarro had three hits, but the Blue Jays dropped to 7-17 in August. Mark Buehrle (11-9) allowed four runs and seven hits in six-plus innings, leaving the lefty with a 1-13 record and a 6.14 ERA in 20 career starts against New York.

CUBS 7, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Jorge Soler hit two homers for the Cubs, and fellow rookie Javier Baez had a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning off All-Star reliever Pat Neshek.

The Cardinals lost in the return of Yadier Molina. The All-Star catcher, who had been sidelined by a torn ligament in his right thumb, and went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.

The crowd at Busch Stadium gave Molina a standing ovation when he walked in from the bullpen after pregame warmups, and another cheer before he batted in the first inning.

Neshek (6-1) led NL relievers with an 0.81 ERA entering the game. It was 2-all when he came in to begin the eighth, and he gave up hits to the first three batters.

Neil Ramirez (2-1) allowed two hits in a scoreless seventh.

RED SOX 8, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Rookie Mookie Betts hit his first career grand slam and Anthony Ranaudo pitched six effective innings, leading Boston to the road win.

After Yoenis Cespedes drove in his second run of the game with a double, Betts connected off Chris Archer (8-7) to cap a five-run second inning that made it 8-0.

Ranaudo (3-0), recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game, gave up three runs and five hits. He has won all three of his big league starts.

Archer allowed eight runs and nine hits over four innings. The Rays have lost nine of 13.

RANGERS 13, ASTROS 6

HOUSTON (AP) -- Michael Choice and Rougned Odor each hit a three-run homer, powering Texas to the win.

The Rangers were up by two in the fourth inning when Choice launched his ninth home run into the Crawford Boxes in left field. Odor connected in a five-run seventh inning with a shot to the seats in right field.

Adam Rosales and Elvis Andrus added two RBIs apiece for the Rangers, who have the worst record in the American League. Scott Baker (3-3) pitched 6 1-3 innings for his second straight win.

Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer (4-10) yielded nine hits and a career-high seven runs in 4 1-3 innings.

METS 4, PHILLIES 1

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jacob deGrom pitched seven crisp innings and the Mets scored the tiebreaking runs when left fielder Grady Sizemore dropped an easy pop fly.

Eric Campbell stole home on a double steal, helping the Mets stay out of the NL East cellar with their 12th victory in 17 games against Philadelphia this year.

The Phillies had won four straight and six of seven. A victory in the series opener would have pushed last-place Philadelphia past New York, but Sizemore's two-out error with the bases loaded in the seventh cost them.

In a matchup of rookie right-handers, deGrom (7-6) allowed four hits and an unearned run. Jenrry Mejia struck out three in the ninth for his 20th save.

David Buchanan went six innings for the Phillies, giving up one run and four hits. Jake Diekman (3-4) got the loss.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, ROCKIES 2

PHOENIX (AP) -- Jake Lamb hit a grand slam for his second career homer, and the Diamondbacks rallied for the win.

The rookie, called up from Triple-A Reno on Aug. 7, connected with two out in the eighth inning, hitting a drive to centre off Adam Ottavino. Rex Brothers (4-6) walked his only three batters and threw a wild pitch before Ottavino came in.

Brad Ziegler (5-2) gave up a run in his one inning but got the victory. Addison Reed fanned two in a perfect ninth for his 31st save of the season and No. 100 for his career.

BRAVES 5, MARLINS 2

ATLANTA (AP) -- Justin Upton homered and had three RBIs, Jason Heyward drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Atlanta won its third straight.

The Braves, winners in 10 of 14, began the night 1 1/2 games back in the NL wild-card standings, but are just 19-21 since the All-Star break.

Andrelton Simmons led off the seventh against Chris Hatcher (0-2) with a bunt single and advanced to third on pinch-hitter Ramiro Pena's single.

Simmons scored on Heyward's RBI single to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. Upton's RBI single off Sam Dyson drove in Heyward from second and Emilio Bonifacio also scored to make it 5-2 when centre fielder Marcell Ozuna misplayed the ball.

Jordany Valdespin tied it at 2-all in the Miami seventh with a pinch-hit homer, the seventh of his career, off reliever David Carpenter (5-3).
