In a public letter addressed to his newborn daughter Max, Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, said he and his wife plan to donate 99 per cent of their Facebook shares during their lifetimes.

In a lengthy piece published on his social network Tuesday, Zuckerberg speculated about the world his daughter would grow up in while expressing his hopes of “advancing human potential” and “promoting equality” for the upcoming generation.

Near the end of the letter, Zuckerberg announced he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, would be donating the vast majority of their fortune towards these causes.

“We will give 99% of our Facebook shares -- currently about $45 billion -- during our lives to advance this mission,” he wrote. “We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.”
