The Liberal Party has confirmed that two of its candidates were asked to leave a Calgary polling centre on Friday.

The Liberals say Cam Stewart, their candidate in the riding of Calgary Forest Lawn, and Darshan Kang, Liberal candidate the riding of Calgary Skyview, were invited to a speaking event at the Genesis Centre on Friday.

The party says the candidates had no idea they were anywhere near an advance polling station that was taking place on the premises at the same time.

Footage shows Stewart a few metres away from voters waiting to cast their ballots. A photo shows Kang apparently campaigning, with a “vote” sign visible in the background.

Both candidates left the Genesis Centre polling station after being asked to do so by a returning officer.

The party says it accepts the candidates’ explanation that they were not aware that they were near a polling station.

A Friday morning tweet from the @DarshanKang Twitter account, which says it's run by campaign volunteers, posted information that related to the same advance polling station, urging voters to get out and cast their ballots.

Campaigning at polling stations is not permitted under Elections Canada rules.
