Dave Kergan always knew his cat, Eddie, was special.

Kergan, who lives in Wasaga Beach, Ont., adopted Eddie from a local shelter. Kergan lives with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, and he described the cat as his “guardian angel.”

“He’s brought a lot of love to me, and he’s made me feel a lot better,” Kergan told CTV Barrie.

One day last winter, Kergan wondered what Eddie would look like with a bow tie. So he affixed a tiny, cat-sized bow tie around Eddie’s collar.

The ensemble was adorable, and Kergan decided to post a picture of Eddie’s new look on Facebook.

Naturally, the photo of the cat in the bow tie was a hit online. So Kergan started posted more pictures of Eddie in different bowties -- made by his wife -- on a Facebook page in the community.

The fashionable feline quickly gained a dedicated online following. These days, Eddie is often photographed sporting outfits fit for the season, like his “vampire bat hunter” look for Halloween or his maple-leaf printed bowtie for Remembrance Day.

For the upcoming holiday season, Kergan started making Christmas tree ornaments for Eddie’s fans. He sold the pieces for $15 each, with $5 from the sales going toward the local animal shelter where he adopted Eddie.

So far, the dapper cat has raked in more than $500 for the shelter.

Sonya Reichel, executive director of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society, said the gesture “really touched our hearts.”

“Our veterinary bills are enormous, are going to see about 1,500 cats and dogs that are going to come through our building this year,” Reichel said.

Eddie and his family have also bought more than 100 cans of pet food for dogs and cats at the shelter.

Aside from his sartorial savvy and charitable contributions, Eddie is an all-around great pet, Kergan said.

“He’s one of the best cats I’ve ever had,” he said.
