Controversial 'Top Gear' host Jeremy Clarkson will not have his contract renewed, the BBC announced Thursday.

The U.K. government-run broadcaster announced Thursday it would not renew Clarkson's contract in the wake of a scandal involving the 'Top Gear' host and one of the show's producers.

"It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract," Tony Hall, the BBC's director-general, said in a statement.

"I have done so only after a very careful consideration of the facts and after personally meeting both Jeremy and Oison Tymon."

The move comes two weeks after the BBC said it was investigating an alleged "fracas" between Clarkson and Tymon, a producer on the show.

It's alleged Clarkson punched Tymon over a dispute involving a meal.

Hall described the incident as "a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature."

Clarkson denied any knowledge of the BBC move in a tweet on Thursday.

Hall says Tymon will "continue to have an important role" within the BBC.
