VANCOUVER - A woman who was sexually assaulted by the brother of serial killer Robert Pickton has been awarded $45,000 in civil court.

A B.C. Supreme Court jury has ruled that David Pickton inflicted psychological trauma on a woman after assaulting her more than two decades ago.

The total award includes $20,000 in punitive damages, which the woman's lawyer says is intended as a deterrent.

Pickton was fined $1,000 and sentenced to one year of probation after being convicted of sexual assault in 1992.

The woman testified that Pickton cornered her inside a trailer, pressed her up against a wall and groped her genitals over her jeans before threatening to rape and kill her.
