A 47-year-old Tecumseh, Ont. woman had her licence suspended and her Mercedes impounded for a week when she was stopped for driving more than twice the legal speed limit on Highway 401 in southern Ontario.

Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police said the woman was seen driving at 11:30 a.m. at speeds of 220 km/h, while the posted speed limit was 100 km/h.

"That's really, really fast. Along with speeds like that come increased chance of injury, collision, fatality – the faster the speed is, the less time people have to react," Const. Janine Belanger told CTVNews.ca

"This is definitely a faster speed than what we are typically seeing lately."

Belanger said the driver was charged with racing and it was lucky that no one was hurt in the incident, adding that the officer on the scene did not attempt to pursue the driver, but could not provide details of how she was apprehended.

"Reaction time decreases significantly as speeds go higher and higher," she said. "It's not for nothing that there's a speed limit and it's always safe to abide by that."
