An Alberta farmer says he felt “sick” after discovering dozens of Canada geese that had been mowed down by a vehicle on the side of a rural road outside Innisfail.

“It just looked terrible,” farmer Joe Urban told CTV Edmonton. He said an unknown driver likely struck the large family of geese and drove off, leaving the birds dead or dying in a mess of feathers and blood at the side of the road.

“Those poor animals – nice fat geese, the old ones and the young ones, they looked so nice,” he said. “Who could do that with that many?”

Alberta Fish and Wildlife says it’s an offence to harass, injure or kill wild animals.

RCMP in nearby Innisfail say they received multiple calls about the incident last Wednesday, which happened on a rural road that runs along the edge of a lake.

A police spokesperson said drivers should stop and check their vehicle for damage in the event that they strike an animal. Drivers are also encouraged to contact police or Alberta Fish and Wildlife if they injure or kill an animal.

Police have closed the case but will look into any additional information in the event that it becomes available.
