Two Edmonton police offices have been charged with selling anabolic steroids.

Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates allegations of police misconduct, announced the charges on Friday.

Det. Greg Lewis and Const. Darren French have been arrested, and are facing charges of trafficking a controlled substance.

ASIRT said in a statement that the investigation began two years ago, when the Edmonton Police Service was tipped off about a cop who had allegedly sold anabolic steroids to fellow officers between 2006 and 2010.

The province's police watchdog says that there is "no evidence" to suggest the operation was done for "commercial gain," and it does not believe that sale of anabolic steroids is "systemic" or "pervasive" in the Edmonton police force.

It is alleged that Lewis sold Stanozolol, testosterone and Methyl-1-Testosterone.

Stanozolol, also known as Winstrol, is an anabolic steroid sometimes used to stimulate muscle growth.

French has also been charged for the alleged sale of Stanozolol.

None of the allegations against the two officers have been proven in court.
