A Saskatoon woman who was shocked to see a pickup truck driving through town last weekend, its bed filled with dead coyotes, says she wants new legislation to keep such grisly displays out of sight.

Tiffiny Koback spotted the pickup filled with dead coyotes at her local coffee shop drive-thru on Sunday. Koback, who works for the Saskatoon SPCA, says she was “devastated” by the sight.

She took a picture of the truck and posted the photo to Facebook. The image has since been shared dozens of times and garnered plenty of angry comments. Other similar photos of another truck were taken in December and have also circulated online.

While hunting coyotes at this time of year is not illegal in south Saskatchewan, Koback says there should be laws requiring hunters to cover up the carcasses in their vehicles.

“To bring that kind of thing into the city where people are exposed to that, and children are exposed to seeing that kind of thing, is quite visually disturbing,” Koback told CTV Saskatoon.

The City of Saskatoon does not have bylaws requiring hunters to cover up dead animals. Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment has no such laws either, but Rich Hildebrand, a conservation officer with the ministry, says most hunters know to be discreet with their kill.

“Esthetically it’s not very pleasing to the eye, possibly, when you see that kind of thing… I guess we would just suggest that if somebody is transporting them like that, they should cover them up with a tarp,” Hildebrand said.

Koback thinks there should be some legislation and hopes that her photo at least draws attention to the issue.
