The pilot of a small plane has been taken to hospital after crash-landing on a highway near the Washington-British Columbia border.

Authorities said the aircraft clipped a large truck and exploded into flames on Highway 97, a few kilometres north of Osoyoos.

The pilot, who was only person on the plane, was transported to Kelowna General Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Officials have yet to reveal why the plane was forced to land on the highway, or change its original flight path.

A plume of smoke could be seen billowing from the scene of crash and Highway 97 was closed in both directions.

Osoyoos is a small town of 4,845 people about four kilometres north of the U.S. border.
