A diplomat from Saudi Arabia was pulled over in Ottawa Tuesday night on suspicion of drunk driving, but refused to provide a breath sample before he was released.

The 32-year-old man, who has not been identified, has full diplomatic immunity.

In a news release, Ottawa Police said he was released on a notice to appear and “into the care of the relevant embassy.”

Police did not say which embassy is involved, but CTV Ottawa reported Wednesday that the diplomat is from Saudi Arabia.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to calls about an erratic driver on Ottawa’s Riverside Drive. Officers stopped the vehicle on another street and detained the driver, who “exhibited signs of impairment,” according to the news release.

The driver refused to provide a breath sample, police said.

As many as eight or nine Ottawa Police and RCMP vehicles were seen at the scene.

Police said their investigation continues and officers are “in contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada regarding diplomatic status.”
