A diamond ring given to a Saskatoon man on his 50th wedding anniversary has been stolen from the hospital room where he is dying of cancer.

Larry Beaucage’s ring was in his wife’s purse when it was snatched from St. Paul’s Hospital, as she was helping her husband in the washroom.

"It had a lot of meaning to him and my kids and I want it back,” Gayle Beaucage told CTV Saskatoon, fighting back tears. “They can keep everything, just give me the ring."

The couple’s son, Darcey, said they have not yet told Larry because it would upset him too much to know the gift is gone.

"How could somebody go into a ward knowing that people are there to die and strip a wife, a mother, a grandmother of her dignity?" he said.

The family is trying desperately to track down the ring – a gold band with nine diamonds -- before Larry finds out.

So far the only lead has come from Wal-Mart, where security camera footage may have captured someone tried to use Gayle’s credit card.

Gayle said she hopes the ring will be returned by spring when the couple is due to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
