Signs banning children over the age of three from opposite gender change rooms at municipal pools in London, Ont. will be removed following outrage from parents, a local councillor says.

Coun. Mo Salih said he learned about the signs on Saturday and immediately contacted the city’s manager of aquatic services.

“My first reaction was, I was hoping this was a typo but it appears that wasn’t the case,” Salih told CTV News Channel on Monday.

The signs posted at various municipal pools read: “Children over the age of 3 are not permitted in the opposite sex change room. If necessary, please ask a staff member to escort your child through the proper change room.”

The rule sparked outrage online, with many parents saying they would never let their young children go into a change room with a stranger.

In a Facebook post, City of London Aquatics said the rule was “based on feedback from our users and their comfort level with these situations.”

But Salih said the signs are “contrary to city policy,” which permits children who are 12 or younger and accompanied by a parent or caregiver to go into opposite-gender municipal washrooms and change rooms.

Salih said the pool signs will be removed and the language in the city policy will be updated to make the rules more clear and consistent.

Salih called the signs “completely unacceptable” and said he wasn’t sure how long they had been in place.
