WINNIPEG -- An inquest has been called into the death of a man shot by Winnipeg police last November.

Mark Dicesare, who was 24, was killed after a police chase and standoff with officers.

Police had been called following reports of a man driving and pointing a gun at people.

Dicesare was shot after being surrounded on a field at a busy city intersection.

He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting is still under investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which reviews police conduct.

John Younes, Manitoba's acting chief medical examiner, said the inquest is to determine the circumstances related to Dicesare's death and what, if anything, could have been done to prevent it.

The date, time and location of the inquest will be determined later.
