A Kitchener, Ont. family is desperate to get their stolen dog back after it was taken right from their backyard, steps from where they slept.

On Sunday morning, Michelle and Chip Gall noticed one of their dogs, Thunder, had been stolen.

“I thought it was odd because he hadn’t barked at the door and he was gone,” Chip told CTV Kitchener.

Woodstock Police told CTV Kitchener someone entered the Gall’s yard and took the 9-year-old Alaskan Malamute, sometime between 2:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, from the cage where he slept with the family’s other dog Maya.

“Our youngest is only 12 and you know he can’t comprehend that someone would come into our yard and take our dog,” Michelle Gall said.

When Chip realized Thunder was gone he looked out front and spotted a suspicious vehicle across the street. He told CTV Kitchener he saw a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck with a dog cage in it. But before he could take a closer look it was gone.

Police are now looking for the vehicle.

“This would be a person of interest,” Const. Nikki VanLeeuwen with Woodstock Police Service told CTV Kitchener.

Meanwhile, the Gall family has posted Thunder’s picture on social media to help find him and bring their beloved dog home.

Woodstock Police are investigating and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
