HALIFAX -- Halifax Regional Police say one of their officers fired his gun at a dog while conducting surveillance on a home as part of an ongoing investigation.

Police say the officer was on the street outside of the home today when two dogs ran from the property and aggressively charged at him.

The officer fired three shots, striking one of the dogs, which police describe as a bull terrier breed.

Police say the animals fled back into the home after the shots were fired.

Moments later, police say someone in the home called 911 to report the shooting.

The injured dog and its owner were taken to a veterinary clinic by one of the officers at the scene.

A police spokeswoman did not know the dog's condition.
