An inmate who escaped a Manitoba jail and drove away in a government pickup truck was gone for five hours before police were made aware of the jailbreak.

Staff at Brandon Correctional Centre received a call from Saskatchewan RCMP Monday morning informing them that a 27-year-old inmate had been arrested in the neighbouring province.

Police said the inmate escaped the jail shortly after 3 a.m. Monday. The man managed to steal a Manitoba government pickup truck parked in the jail parking lot and drove more than 200 kilometres west into Saskatchewan.

He was arrested by RCMP in Oxbow, Sask. after police received a complaint from a citizen. Jail staff in Brandon were informed about the arrest at approximately 8 a.m. Monday.

Brandon Correctional Centre confirmed in a statement to CTVNews.ca that the inmate escaped early Monday morning and was returned to police custody “a few hours later.”

A Manitoba Justice spokesperson said an internal review will be conducted to determine how the inmate escaped, and how the jail can prevent similar situations from happening in the future.

The RCMP said the man had suffered “significant injuries” and was transported to a Regina hospital.

Two inmates escaped Brandon Correctional Centre in 2011 while in the outdoor exercise area. They were both arrested by police a short time later near Winnipeg.

The medium-security facility holds 157 adult males and provides short-term holding for up to 10 young offenders and four adult females.

The man is charged with escape from lawful custody and theft of a motor vehicle.
