There's no getting around the odd new art installation on the lawn of Stewart Hall in Pointe-Claire, Que.

It's a stack of traffic cones. Ten stacks, actually, piled high and stencilled with various designs as a tribute to Canada's 150th anniversary.

Reaction in the Montreal suburb has been mixed since artist Giorgia Volpe installed the pylons, which are officially called "The Ten Public Works." The pylons are meant to symbolize a national identity under construction.

Pointe-Claire Mayor Morris Trudeau says he's not concerned with the lukewarm response.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," he told CTV Montreal. "What one person considers a beautiful piece of art, someone might decide it's not to their liking."

One passer-by offered a fitting critique of the art installation. "It's interesting," he said. "That's the number one word to use for it. Interesting."

The pylon exhibit is the first of a planned 12 art installations slated to go up on the lawn of Stewart Hall, a cultural centre and art gallery in Pointe-Claire.
