Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s website was “temporarily inaccessible” to users as the U.S. election results were being tallied, the federal government says, confirming that the outage was due to a surge in people trying to access it.

As the results of the U.S. presidential election poured in on Tuesday night, users complained over social media about the apparent website outage.

In a statement to CTV News on Wednesday morning, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada spokesperson Lisa Filipps confirmed that the website, “became temporarily inaccessible to users as a result of a significant increase in the volume of traffic.”

Shared Services Canada “worked through the night and continues to work to resolve the issue to ensure that the website is available to users as soon as possible,” Filipps added.

The outage prompted Twitter users to speculate whether it was an indication that Americans displeased with the presidential race results were considering moving north.

However, moving to Canada isn’t as easy as some might assume.
