Whale watchers were shocked when they witnessed a small boat strike a grey whale in U.S. waters just south of B.C.

The incident happened Sunday when a small boat struck the whale near Whidbey Island, located off the coast of Washington State.

In video captured by passengers aboard a nearby whale-watching vessel, the small boat can be seen lifting out of the water by the force of the impact. The boat stopped briefly before fleeing the area. It’s unclear if the whale was injured.

A witness aboard the whale-watching vessel said she sent images and video to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
