EMERSON, Man. - An evacuation order issued after two rail cars loaded with propane jumped the tracks in the Manitoba border town of Emerson has now been lifted.
The order affecting about 40 people ended early Wednesday morning after the cars were put back on the tracks without incident and road blocks were removed.
RCMP said a total of four cars in a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight derailed early Tuesday morning on a major line that crosses the border into the United States, but there were no injuries, leaks or fires.
Firefighters and hazardous material crews stood by while rail workers cleared the accident scene, but people in several nearby homes were ordered to leave as a precaution.
Emerson Mayor Wayne Arseny (AHR'-seh-nee) says in an email statement that skilled workers and tired volunteers helped bring about a good ending to the emergency.
Arseny also says the town was prepared for it because of experience over the years fighting floods on the Red River, which flows through the community.
