1. Soccer tragedy: An Ont. teen is dead after she was somehow trapped under a soccer net crossbar. South Simcoe police say the 15-year-old victim and another girl were playing at a sports field in Bradford when the incident occurred Wednesday night.

2. Ebola outbreak: The U.S. Peace Corps are removing hundreds of volunteers from the three African countries affected by the outbreak. As fear grows that Ebola might reach other continents, one leading health expert says Canada is prepared to prevent the spread of the deadly disease in North America.

3. RCMP shooting suspect: Justin Bourque, the 24-year-old man accused of killing three Mounties in a Moncton, N.B., is due in court Thursday. Bourque, who is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the June 4 shootings, has been undergoing a psychiatric assessment.

4. First Nation protest: Members of the Grassy Narrows First Nation will march to the Ont. legislature Thursday, to protest the government's response to mercury poisoning in the community. The northern Ontario First Nation has accused the federal and provincial governments of sitting on a report about the mercury poisoning since 2009. They also say the government has failed to provide affected residents with adequate support and health care.

5. Mother of the year? An octopus living deep in the waters of the Monterey Bay, California, has broken the record for the longest egg-brooding period ever reported in any animal species. The creature spent 4.5 years guarding approximately 160 eggs – all apparently without feeding herself.
