Here are the five things you need to know this Friday: Black smoke covers parts of the Prairies; can pills containing insulin could prevent or delay Type 1 diabetes; military wives find power in song; and there's a new Bubble Wrap that can't be popped.

Plus, today's "Flashback Friday" looks at summer blockbusters on this date from years past.

1. Launch success: A Russian booster rocket has successfully launched an unmanned cargo ship to the International Space Station, where supplies are anxiously awaited after the successive failures of two previous supply runs.

2. Air quality warnings in Prairies: Wildfires in Saskatchewan have produced so much black smoke they've actually lowered temperatures in the province, which could help firefighting crews in their work. The smoke also prompted Environment Canada to issue air quality alerts for parts of the province and neighbouring Manitoba.

3. Preventing Type 1 diabetes: Insulin, a longtime life-saver for people with diabetes, is now the focus of a new scientific study: What if pills containing the same medicine patients inject every day could also prevent the disease?

4. Singing Sisterhood: The Canadian Military Wives Choir gathers strength in unity and the power of song. Its members include the spouses of soldiers and active members of the military, and it's growing in popularity across the country.

5. Sorry to burst your bubble: Imagine a world where Bubble Wrap couldn't be popped. Scary, isn't it? But don't worry. While it's true the latest Bubble Wrap product won't pop, the company says its "vintage" version is still for sale.

And one more thing for Flashback Friday:
