A home invasion victim and his attacker are in hospital following a bloody struggle involving bear spray, a machete and a replica firearm in Abbotsford, B.C.

Police were called to a home on Crescent Way near Switzer Avenue in Abbotsford, at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, after receiving multiple reports of a disturbance from neighbours.

The 55-year-old victim answered the door to a 25-year-old man in a mask, police said. The masked man allegedly forced his way into the home and attacked the homeowner, before the homeowner's son arrived to help subdue the attacker.

Police say the masked intruder had several weapons, including bear spray, which he used during the fight. Investigators also recovered a replica firearm and a machete at the scene.

"It was chaotic. There was a lot of mayhem," Const. Ian MacDonald told CTV Vancouver.

The victim's son said he was alerted to the fight by his father's screams.

"The guy was biting my dad in the arm," said the son. "I saw my dad's face and he was just cut up."

The victim's son did not wish to be identified because he says he recognized the attacker as a personal acquaintance.

Police arrived to break up the fight and the victim and attacker were both transported to hospital.

The victim was in serious condition, police said.

The suspect is expected to face assault charges once he recovers from injuries sustained in the struggle.

The home had to be ventilated to get rid of the bear spray, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
