Two hikers were rescued from Coliseum Mountain on Vancouver's North Shore Monday just before nightfall.

The women were close to the summit of the mountain when one of them fell nearly five metres. She suffered head injuries and broke her wrist.

The North Shore Rescue team managed to locate the two just before dark, and lifted them away in a dramatic helicopter rescue.

Team manager Jeff Yarnold said locating the hikers before the sunset was critical.

"We spent some time trying to locate them, and the thought starts to go through our minds that 'If we can't get them out before dark, it now changes the whole scenario,'" he told CTV Vancouver.

The rescue was difficult, the team said, as the search area spanned more than 24 kilometres of trail with unreliable cellular service.
