TORONTO -- Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) is partnering with Vice Media as part of a $100-million joint venture that will create a new TV channel and open a production studio in Toronto.

The partnership will pair Montreal-created Vice with the Canadian media powerhouse Rogers, which will launch a Vice-branded TV channel.

Plans are still in the early stages.

Under the agreement, Rogers will open a new production facility next year that will create news, drama and documentary content.

The location of the facility is still undecided, according to a Rogers spokeswoman.

Rogers will also gain the rights to exclusive mobile content that it will distribute to its subscribers through daily updates to Rogers and Fido customers.

Vice will oversee creation of the content while Rogers intends to largely play the role of a content distributor.

Vice, which began as a politics and culture magazine from its Montreal offices, has been expanding its reach into video content with a popular YouTube channel and a weekly series on U.S. cable channel HBO.
