The majority of Canadians say that buying Canadian products is more important to them, even if the price is higher, according to a recent Nanos survey.

Fifty-two per cent of those surveyed said that it is more important to them personally to buy a Canadian product, even if it costs more, while 28 per cent said that buying the cheapest product is more important when it comes to shopping. Twenty per cent of survey respondents said they are unsure.

Pollster Nik Nanos said Canadians are “cross-pressured” to be patriotic when it comes to shopping, but also to get the best value for their dollar. He said although the majority said they’d be willing to pay more for Canadian products, that doesn’t mean there’s no limit to what the average Canadian would pay.

“The key takeaway is Canadians are patriotic consumers. They’d like to buy Canadian goods, but they are also hard-nosed consumers who want a low price,” Nanos told CTVNews.ca.

The majority of Canadians also support (29 per cent) or somewhat support (47 per cent) requiring all levels of government in Canada to source goods and services from Canadian companies where possible, even if it leads to a higher cost for taxpayers.

Twelve per cent said they somewhat oppose the idea, while another 10 per cent are opposed to it.

Methodology

Nanos conducted an RDD dual frame (land- and cell-lines) hybrid telephone and online random survey of 1,000 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, between April 29 and May 5, 2017 as part of an omnibus survey. Participants were randomly recruited by telephone using live agents and administered a survey online.

The margin of error for a random survey of 1,000 Canadians is ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
