TORONTO - Canada's dollar is having a modest comeback this morning but North American stock indexes are lower.

The loonie was at 74.89 cent US, up 0.19 from the previous close. It ended the day Monday at 74.70 cents US, the lowest close since March 8.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, the S&P/TSX composite index was down 19.92 points at 14,903.09.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 37.43 points to 18,185.60, while the S&P 500 fell 6.28 points to 2,145.05. The Nasdaq composite dropped 18.33 points to 5,291.50.

The December crude contract was down 52 cents at US$50.00 per barrel and December natural gas fell 13.1 cents to US$3.19 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract rose $7.80 to US$1,271.50 an ounce and December copper contracts were up four cents at US$2.13 a pound.
