Ashley Madison’s parent company says the adultery website is still signing up new users by the thousands, despite the fallout from a massive data breach.

In a statement issued Monday, the company that owns Ashley Madison wrote that "hundreds of thousands" of people, including 87,596 women, had signed up in the past week.

"The company continues its day-to-day operations even as it deals with the theft of its private data by criminal hackers," Avid Life Media said in the statement.

The Toronto-based website aimed at facilitating extramarital affairs was targeted by hackers in July. Earlier this month, hackers released a file containing the email and home addresses of 37 million people registered with the site.

Avid Life also addressed reports questioning the veracity of its claimed 5.5 million female members.

"Last week alone, women sent more than 2.8 million messages within our platform," the company said in its statement Monday, adding that its ratio of male to female members is 1.2 to 1.

"Recent media reports predicting the imminent demise of Ashley Madison are greatly exaggerated."
