March Break is one month away and nothing planned? Fear not, it is not too late!
If you are thinking about staying close to home, ski hills in Canada are offering some great options for some family fun.
Blue Mountain in Collingwood has a great line up of activities taking place both on and off the mountain. Students can take advantage of discounted lift tickets at $39 for all elementary and high school students.
Each day, there will be themed events to enjoy and prizes to be won. Enjoy scavenger hunts, guided snowshoe tours, birds of prey shows, face painting, outdoor ski and snowboard movies, fire dancers, glow in the dark broomball, indoor movies for resort hotel guests, fireworks and the popular free outdoor concert featuring Suzie McNeil on Wednesday, March 14.
On Vancouver Island, Mount Washington Alpine Resort has some great spring specials. Join the Mountain Kids Snow School for Holiday fun during their Spring Break Camps. These campes are designed to help your child improve their skiing or snowboarding skills and to have some fun rip'n around the mountain. Group sizes are small, with a maximum of six kids to one instructor. The Kid's Three-Day Holiday Camp is $160 and the Five-Day Camp is $270.
Here's a tip if you are hunting for good deals. Unlike many ski resorts, Banff, Alberta's high season is actually summer so the town makes a great value ski destination.
If you aren't interested in spending your March Break week on the slopes, there are options close to home. Remember that business travel is extremely limited over this period of time, so hotels in city-centre destinations often create packages to entice families to stay and play.
In Edmonton, for example, plenty of hotels offer packages in partnership with the West Edmonton Mall including ones with unique ways to interact with marine life. The Sea Lion Encounter allows you to touch, train, and swim with Pablo, Clara, or Kelpie— the only program of its kind in Canada. Or be a Trainer for the day to work alongside one of the animal care staff and learn what it is like to care for sting rays, sea turtles, reptiles, and other animals.
The Fallsview Indoor Waterpark in Niagara Falls, Ont. is celebrating "March Break Mania" between March 9 and 18. You and your family can take in the three-acre aqua extravaganza, featuring 16 waterslides, a massive indoor wave pool, a "Beach House" Aqua Play area and more. Purchase the Hotel Waterpark Package and enjoy accommodations, four tickets to Danny Zzzz Master Hypnotist Show, a $20.00 Family Attraction Gift Card and kids eat free at the Fallsview Restaurant.
Country Haven Lodge, just outside of Miramichi, New Brunswick has a great winter package on right now They offer snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sliding and skating on a frozen pond located on the property. There is also a company nearby offering sleigh rides where you can enjoy a peaceful, three-hour glide through the snowy woods to a log cabin for hot refreshments.
If you are a sun-seeker, there are still deals to be had. They are constantly changing but if you can get a week at an All-Inclusive at this time of year for less than $1300 you are doing pretty well. Do remember, though, that not all resorts are created equal. It's worth checking out the hotel services and on-line ratings at user-review sites like such as TripAdvisor.
Should you book now or wait? I think you will still be able to get some truly last minute deals. Just make sure you are not too picky about the destination. You need to be flexible.
