A South African coffee billed by its inventor as “the world’s strongest” will soon be available for sale in Canada through the website Amazon.ca.

Black Insomnia Coffee, which already ships to Canada through its website, contains about 702 milligrams of caffeine per 12-oz cup – more than four times the typical 143 mg of caffeine.

Sean Kristafor, who invented the coffee along with a partner in 2016, told CTV News Channel Thursday that he believes the coffee tastes great. When people try it, he says, they say “‘Wow this is a really good cup of coffee,’ and then about 10 seconds later, they say: ‘Wow, that’s actually a very strong cup of coffee.’”

Kristafor said he drinks a cup when he wakes up at 4 a.m., another about an hour later and then, usually, a third cup later in the day.

Kristafor experimented with a higher caffeine content, but decided that higher levels negatively affected the taste, according to a press release.

Health is also a potential concern. The Mayo Clinic states that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day “appears to be safe for most healthy adults.” Drinking more than that may lead to migraine headaches, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, restlessness, frequent urination, stomach upset, fast heartbeat and muscle tremors, according to The Mayo Clinic.
