Las Vegas has emerged the top holiday destination for 2016 in a new report from Expedia, among those looking to escape fractious family gatherings or just a raucous good time.

In Expedia's “holidata” which looks at bookings and check-in dates during the holiday period, Sin City emerged the leading holiday destination for U.S. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve 2016.

Likewise, New York slips behind Las Vegas as the second most popular holiday destination during all three occasions.

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, travelers are advised to book between 21 and 30 days in advance to find the best deals.

Travelers seem to have more leeway for Christmas, when Expedia experts say savings can be found within as little as seven to 13 days' lead time.

Meanwhile, vacationers looking to escape the holiday madness at home will find savings of up to 25 percent over Thanksgiving for holiday packages to Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Los Cabos this year.

That spikes to 40 percent over Christmas, for flights from New York (JFK) to Cancun (CUN).

Flights from Los Angeles to Cancun are also averaging 25 percent less than last year.
