With days to go before Halloween, Canadians are looking for costume inspiration from cartoons, superheroes and a certain U.S. presidential hopeful, according to Google Canada.

Among the top-searched costumes are Harley Quinn, a comic book adversary of Batman, Baymax, a robot from Disney’s “Big Hero 6,” and Donald Trump, the businessman-turned-presidential-hopeful currently leading the Republican nomination race.

About 50 per cent of all searches for Halloween costumes and decorations typically come within five days of the event, according to Google Canada’s figures.

“We’re actually just starting to see searches go through the roof,” Google Trends expert Aaron Brindle told CTV’s Canada AM on Monday morning.

Other popular costume searches include:

  • The Joker
  • Steampunk
  • Cruella Deville
  • Minions
  • Mad Max
  • Star Wars
  • Minecraft
  • Princess Peach
  • Black Widow
  • Left Shark
  • The Purge
  • Deadpool

Halloween makeup tutorials have also been a popular search topic, with Canadians especially interested in “sugar skull” makeup, the flowery designs popular during Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations.

Brindle says that searches for makeup have grown about 30 per cent over the past few years.

Meanwhile, some of Canada’s top horror-film searches are “It,” “Alien,” “Halloween,” “The Birds” and “Carrie.”

In terms of Halloween candy, the top three searches are classic staples: M&Ms, Skittles and candy corn.
