CALGARY - A group of inspectors is checking out every aspect of animal care at the Calgary Zoo following a string of high-profile deaths at the facility.
Zoo president Clement Lanthier says the review will look at everything from diet and veterinary care to whether zoo habitats meet the animals' physical and social needs.
The review is being done by experts from the Santa Barbara Zoo, the Toronto Zoo, the Seneca Park Zoo and the Vancouver Aquarium, as well as the dean of the University of Calgary's veterinary program.
Lanthier requested the investigation in December, after a capybara was crushed to death when a worker closed a hydraulic door.
The zoo had also weathered criticism over 41 stingrays that died as a result of human error and the strangulation of a Turkmenian markhor that got caught in a rope in its enclosure.
Zoocheck Canada has called for a more impartial group of reviewers, arguing the zoo industry can't investigate itself.
