Packages of salad sold in five provinces may contain dangerous salmonella bacteria, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned Thursday night.
According to the agency, Fresh Express brand Hearts of Romaine salad packages were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
The U.S. product carries a ‘best before’ date of Oct. 11 and bears the UPC number 0 71279 26201 7.
There have been no reported illnesses so far, but the CFIA warns that consumption of food contaminated with salmonella can cause serious illness and even death in young people, the elderly and those with weak immune systems.
Short-term symptoms of illness from salmonella include high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
The CFIA said it’s possible the salad bags may have been distributed in other parts of Canada as well.
