Two men allegedly on their way to kidnap and murder Justin Bieber were stopped in their tracks when they took a wrong turn in Vermont and ended up in Canada, according to a police affidavit.

The suspects, Mark Staake and his nephew Tanner Ruane, accidentally crossed the border when they missed their exit in Vermont on Nov. 19, the document says.

They had to turn around and join traffic passing through a U.S. border checkpoint at Highgate Springs in Vermont, where a border patrol agent realized that Staake had an outstanding arrest warrant from New Mexico for violating his probation conditions.

Staake was arrested on the spot, while Ruane was apprehended after the alleged murder plot came to light.

Police allege the bizarre plan to kill Bieber and his bodyguard in New York City was orchestrated by Dana Martin, an inmate in a New Mexico jail who is serving a life sentence for killing a 15-year-old girl in Vermont in 2000.

According to police documents, Martin was infatuated with Bieber and even has a tattoo of the Canadian pop star on his leg, but was upset the pop star did not respond to any of his letters.

Martin met Staake in prison and recruited him to kill Bieber and his bodyguard in New York, as well as two other men in Vermont, police allege. The Vermont victims were also to be castrated with hedge clippers, police said.

Martin had also allegedly instructed Staake and Ruane to use paisley neckties to strangle some of the victims -- the same kind of ties he used in the 2000 murder.

Authorities say the two castration targets were not connected to Bieber.

None of the intended victims was hurt and police said it doesn’t appear Bieber was ever in any immediate danger.

Bieber's management team issued a brief statement that said: "We take every precaution to protect and insure the safety of Justin and his fans."

New York State Police said Thursday that troopers found tools and documents connected to the alleged murder plot while executing a search warrant on Ruane's vehicle.

A "hand-written drawing of a depiction of Justin Bieber" was among the seized items.

Staake, 41, has been charged with two counts each of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Ruane, 23, is also facing multiple charges related to the alleged murder plot.
