Canadian pop star Justin Bieber is showing his true holiday spirit, by throwing his support behind a rival single on the British charts, the proceeds of which go to charity.

On Wednesday, Bieber tweeted to his 72 million followers that they should support a single from a National Health Service choir, so that the song could win in the race to be this year's Christmas No. 1.

In the U.K., Christmas number ones are singles that top the U.K. Singles Chart in the week of Christmas Day.

Often, charity singles, novelty songs, or songs with a Christmas or holiday theme have nabbed the top spot, and record sales for the winning single usually peak as Christmas Day nears.

On Wednesday, Bieber noted that the race between his single "Love Yourself," and the NHS Choir's single "A Bridge Over You" was close.

All of the proceeds from the NHS song will be shared between Carers UK, an organization that provides support to people who become care providers for ill friends or family members, Mind, a mental health charity, and other several other smaller charities.

In a series of tweets, Bieber urged his fans to support the charity single, while tweeting out a link for fans to download the competitor track.

"I'm hearing this U.K. Christmas race is close … but the @Choir_NHS single is for charity. So… for 1 week it's OK not to be #1. Let's do the right thing and help them win," he tweeted. "It's Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck."

As of Thursday morning, all three tweets had been re-tweeted tens of thousands of times.

The winner of this year's Christmas No. 1 will be announced at 1 p.m. local time on Christmas Day.
