The first official trailer for the upcoming Star Wars spinoff, "Rogue One," promises a throwback to the look and feel of the 1977 original, but with a roguish female lead and no Jedi in sight.

The film, which has been touted as a direct tie-in to the original "Star Wars: A New Hope," stars Felicity Jones as a rebel without a cause-turned-member of the Rebel Alliance, who helps steal the plans for the evil Empire's first Death Star.

"This is a rebellion, isn't it?" Jones says in the trailer. "I rebel."

The Death Star plans, as fans of the franchise know, wind up with Princess Leia at the beginning of "A New Hope," touching off the events that drive the original trilogy.

The "Rogue One" trailer shows plenty of fighting between Stormtroopers and Rebels, and some familiar settings in the Rebel base and the Death star from the first film. It also offers a glimpse at the first Asian character in "Star Wars," a staff-wielding rebel played by Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen.

"Rogue One," directed by Gareth Edwards, is slated for release on Dec. 16.
