Canadian singer-songwriter Sam Roberts surprised students and their teacher with an impromptu concert at a Toronto school on Monday, after their teacher unveiled a set of new instruments being donated to the school.

Music teacher Terrance Bristow wanted to surprise students at Sprucecourt Junior Public School with a gift of musical instruments purchased for the school.

Bristow received the instruments as part of TD Canada Trust's "Make Today Matter" campaign. Through the month of November, the bank selected 24 Canadian and U.S. customers and surprised them with thousands of dollars to use for an act of kindness.

Bristow told TD he used the money to buy instruments for the school because many parents in the Regent Park community can't afford instruments or lessons.

"As a result, it's very difficult for those students who love to study music during school hours if they can't practise at home because they don't have an instrument to play," the TD website said.

Bristow used the $20,000 given to him by the bank to buy xylophones, drums and keyboards for kids to use in their classrooms.

"It brought tears to his eyes and my eyes to see so many kids happy," TD bank manager Bibi Alli said.

Bristow was surprised by Roberts during an assembly revealing his purchases. Roberts joined Bristow in an impromptu concert for the students.

Roberts told CTV Toronto's Andria Case that he was lucky that his parents could afford instruments and lessons.

Because his parents could afford other instruments, he learned violin and guitar, and practised every day.

The Juno Award winner is currently on tour, and will be playing in Hamilton, Ont. on Thursday. His band played in Peterborough on Monday.

Bristow didn't use all of the money, and said he plans to donate the rest of the money to MusiCounts, a Canadian organization that supplies schools with instruments.

"Mr. Bristow bestowed $12,500 to MusiCounts. That will fully fund two elementary school music programs, and then some," MusiCounts President Allen Reid said at the assembly.
